How SDWF Works
SDWF brings people together to pool resources, learn about community needs, and make collective decisions about where to invest for the greatest impact. By giving together, our members can support nonprofits at a level that goes beyond what any one person could do alone.
Membership
Members contribute annual dues based on their giving capacity. These contributions are combined to create a shared fund to award grants to nonprofits across San Diego County. This creates a level of impact that goes beyond individual giving.
A member-driven model
Our work is guided by our members. Each year, members come together to learn about community needs, shape our funding priority, and vote on where grants are awarded. This ensures every voice has an equal role in our decisions.
Focused funding
Each grant cycle centers on a single priority area identified through research and community insight. This approach allows us to invest deeply and strategically in the issues that matter most in our region.
Trust-based approach
We believe nonprofits are best positioned to lead change in their communities. SDWF provides unrestricted, multi-year funding so organizations can focus on their mission and long-term impact.
Learning together
Members engage in ongoing learning through workshops, discussions, and events. By connecting directly with nonprofit leaders, experts, and community voices, members deepen their understanding of local challenges and how to respond effectively.
Ongoing partnership
Our relationship with community partners continues beyond the grant. We stay connected, amplify their work, and support their visibility in the broader community. Community partners also have opportunities to engage more deeply with SDWF through membership and leadership roles, bringing valuable, on-the-ground perspective to help guide our funding priorities and decision-making.
